Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
About Our Practice
What type of medical practice is this?
We are a medical practice specializing in comprehensive weight loss, obesity medicine, metabolic health, and long-term care after bariatric surgery. Our approach is medical, personalized, and evidence-based, focusing on improving health—not just the number on the scale.
Who do you treat?
We treat patients with:
- Overweight or obesity
- Weight-related medical conditions (such as diabetes, prediabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, PCOS, or sleep apnea)
- A history of bariatric surgery who need long-term follow-up, weight regain management, or nutritional support
Do you believe obesity is a medical condition?
Yes. Obesity is a chronic, relapsing medical disease influenced by genetics, hormones, metabolism, environment, medications, and life factors. This is why willpower alone is not an effective or sustainable treatment.
Getting Started
Do I need a referral?
In most cases, no referral is required. Some insurance plans may require one—our staff can help you check.
What happens at my first visit?
Your initial visit is a comprehensive medical evaluation. We typically review:
- Medical and weight history
- Previous weight loss attempts
- Medications and supplements
- Labs and metabolic health markers
- Lifestyle factors (nutrition, sleep, stress, activity)
Together, we create a personalized treatment plan based on your goals and medical needs.
How long are appointments?
Initial visits are typically longer to allow time for a full assessment. Follow-up visits are focused but thorough, designed to support long-term success.
Treatment Approach
What treatments do you offer?
We offer individualized treatment plans that may include:
- Prescription weight-loss medications (including GLP-1 and other FDA-approved options)
- Medical nutrition therapy
- Metabolic and hormonal optimization
- Lifestyle and behavior coaching
- Management of weight regain
- Post-bariatric surgery medical care
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustments
Not every patient needs every treatment.
Do you prescribe weight-loss medications?
Yes, when medically appropriate. Medications are used as tools, not shortcuts, and are combined with comprehensive medical care.
Are GLP-1–based medications (like semaglutide or tirzepatide) available?
We prescribe GLP-1–based medications when appropriate and safe. We also provide education, side-effect management, and long-term planning to avoid weight cycling.
What is the prior authorization (PA) process for GLP-1 medications?
Many insurance plans require a prior authorization (PA) before approving GLP-1 medications. This means we must submit medical documentation showing that the medication is medically necessary and that you meet your plan’s specific criteria. Here’s what to expect:
- Insurance requirements vary widely and may include BMI thresholds, weight-related conditions, or documentation of previous treatment attempts.
- The review process can take several days to several weeks.
- Some requests are approved; others may be denied based on plan exclusions.
- Additional information or appeals may be required.
Our team will submit required paperwork and guide you through the process, but insurance approval is ultimately determined by your individual plan. If a medication is denied, we will discuss alternative treatment strategies or next steps with you.
Will you just tell me to eat less and exercise more?
No. While nutrition and activity matter, we focus on the biological drivers of weight and treat obesity as the medical condition it is.
Bariatric & Post-Surgery Care
Do you see patients who have already had bariatric surgery?
Yes. We specialize in post-bariatric medical management, including:
- Weight regain or plateau
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Medication management
- Metabolic health optimization
- Long-term follow-up care
I had surgery years ago. Is it too late to get help?
Not at all. Many patients benefit from care years—even decades—after surgery.
Can medications help after bariatric surgery?
Yes. Anti-obesity medications can be effective and safe after bariatric surgery when properly prescribed and monitored.
Expectations & Results
How much weight will I lose?
Results vary. Our focus is on clinically meaningful weight loss and improved health markers—not unrealistic promises.
How long will I need treatment?
Obesity is a chronic condition. Many patients stay in care long-term, similar to managing high blood pressure or diabetes.
What if I’ve tried everything and nothing worked?
That’s extremely common—and exactly why we exist. Prior attempts do not mean failure; they provide valuable information for better treatment.
Insurance & Costs
Do you accept insurance?
We accept many insurance plans. Coverage for obesity treatment varies widely. Our team can help verify benefits.
Are weight-loss medications covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan. We assist with prior authorizations and discuss alternatives if medications are not covered.
What if my insurance doesn’t cover treatment?
We offer transparent self-pay options and will discuss costs before starting care.
Safety & Medical Oversight
Is this program medically supervised?
Yes. All care is provided and supervised by licensed physician with expertise in obesity medicine and metabolic health.
Is weight-loss medication safe?
When prescribed appropriately and monitored, FDA-approved medications are safe and effective. We closely monitor side effects and adjust treatment as needed.
Lifestyle & Support
Do I have to follow a strict diet?
No one-size-fits-all diets here. We focus on sustainable, realistic nutrition strategies that fit your life.
Will I be judged for my weight?
Absolutely not. Our practice is weight-inclusive, respectful, and stigma-free.
What if my motivation changes?
Motivation fluctuates. Our job is to support you through real life—not expect perfection.
Telemedicine & Follow-Up
Do you offer virtual visits?
Yes. Telemedicine is available for many appointments, depending on medical needs and state regulations.
How often will I be seen?
Visit frequency depends on your treatment plan and goals. We adjust over time.
